(originally published in Family Tree Magazine April/May 2005 - a great magazine for genealogy)

Anyone can create a personal website for organizing, sharing and preserving family information for future generations. Your family tree, photos, history, or any other information can be saved for the future, replicated in its entirety in a few minutes and made available to the world. Start now and in a generation or two your family will know their history in a way very few of us do today.

Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) is the language of the World Wide Web. To develop a website you need to understand something about HTML. Of course any sane person wouldn't go to the trouble of learning HTML properly; they would just use a Web editor program like Alleycode to do the work for them. However, there are advantages to learning something about HTML first and when you do use the web editor it will make a lot more sense. You can’t use a calculator without understanding basic arithmetic.
